The quit-or-stay reading has a rhythm I could recognize blindfolded by now. Someone arrives with a spreadsheet in their head — salary, benefits, the market, the manager, the maybe-promotion — and they've run it so many times the numbers have gone blurry. They want me to break the tie. And almost every time, the tie can't be broken, because they're weighing two different currencies and calling it one decision.
01The missing piece
Here it is, the thing almost everyone stuck here is missing: quit-or-stay is actually two separate questions wearing one coat. The first is practical — can I leave? Money, timing, obligations. The second is energetic, is this place still feeding me or is it draining me? People stay stuck because they keep letting the first question answer the second. “I can't afford to leave yet” quietly becomes “so I must not really want to,” and the true signal gets buried under logistics.
Separate them and the fog lifts fast. You're allowed to know, clearly and finally, that this job is done for you, and take eight months to exit well. Knowing and leaving don't have to happen the same week. But refusing to know, because you can't act yet? That's how people lose years.
02The drain test
Forget the job title and answer this instead: what does Sunday evening feel like in your body? Not your opinions about the company, the physical weather of Sunday at 6pm. Dread that starts before the week does is not a mindset problem. It's data. So is this: are you tired in a way that a weekend fixes, or tired in a way that's been accumulating no matter how you rest? A role can be objectively “good” and still be costing more energy than it returns. Bodies keep honest books.
03Fear's favorite disguise
In these readings, fear almost never says “I'm afraid.” It says “I'm being responsible.” It dresses up as prudence, timing, market conditions. One question strips the costume off: if you knew for certain you'd land safely, would you already be gone? If the answer leaps out of you, you have your knowing. Everything after that is logistics, and logistics are solvable.
04What the reading adds
When I tune into this question, I'm reading the energy of where you are and the energy of what's ahead, including timing, which is often the piece that changes everything. “Yes, go” lands very differently when it comes with “and the window that actually serves you opens in a few months, not this week.” People leave these sessions with two things they didn't walk in with: the answer, and a shape for it. That combination is what ends the loop.
